The Lonely Island - Incredibad - Review
At first glance, most people will see or hear about this album and say "Who the fuck are these guys?" But upon popping this gem into your CD player/mp3 player you'll fast recognize hits like "I'm On A Boat" and "Dick in a Box".
Incredibad is the debut album from the comedy troupe feature Andy Samberg of SNL, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone. For a group who refer to themselves as "the greatest fake emcees on Earth" these guys have a lot of talent, and the songs are made even more enjoyable by the inclusion of hit artists such as Jack Black, Justin Timberlake, and T-Pain.
SNL's popular digital shorts "Jizz in My Pants", "I'm on a Boat", "Dick in a Box", "Lazy Sunday", "Space Olympics", and "Natalie's Rap" all make their uncensored appearance on the album, along with several original titles that are just as comical and fun as the digital shorts. All of the songs share very great flow through the songs, and at no point do you feel like your listening to something truly terrible...The album's name says it all...the songs on the album are "Incredible and Bad" - thus Incredibad.
The beats on all of the tracks are actually very well put together, and the best part of the album is the dichotomy between the beats themselves and the lyrics is half of what makes this album so enjoyable to listen to. In my opinion, the music itself is clutch in producing the album. Instead of trying to be something they're not though, these guys just let their comedic side bleed right on through in their lyrics which makes the music itself somewhat unique. Sure we've seen this before with acts like Weird Al, but Weird Al is all about the parodies, whereas these guys are creating comedy from scratch and I've got to give them some mad credit.
All the lyrics to the songs have a lovely memorable feel to them, and after the first listen through you'll find yourself singing along to everything you know the words for. However, as with most hip-hop albums, this comes complete with "Interludes" and as on most hip-hop albums I generally did not find them to be vey interesting, and at some times they become very annoying very quickly. I skip over the interludes every playthrough, and the wonders of iTunes gives me the ability to just flat out remove them after I imported the album. So you're not stuck listening to them everytime.
I know I'll be following TLI after picking up this album, and rumour has it there might even be a small tour to coincide with the album, so keep your ears to the track for more information. This album is definitely a MUST have for ANYONE who's seen the Digital Shorts on SNL and was left wanting more. You'll be driving down Main Street belting away "Dick in a Box" alongside Justin Timberlake before you know it
5/5 - MUST HAVE
